Nakshatra is the the term for the lunar mansion in Hindu Astrology and Indian Astronomy. A Nakshatra is one of 27 (originally 28) sectors along the ecliptic 27 or 28 Lunar Signs of Vedic. Their names are related to a prominent star or asterisms, in or near the respective sectors. According to the Vedas, the starting point for the Nakshatras is Kritika. It has been argued that the cycle starts there, because the Pleiades started the year at the time the Vedas were compiled, presumably at the vernal equinox.
