Etiquette means the customary code of polite behaviour in society. From French étiquette; list of ceremonial observances of a court, property, a little piece of paper, a mark or title. From Frankish *stekan (“to stick, pierce, sting”), and Proto-Indo-European *(s)teyg– (“to be sharp, to stab”). The French Court of Louis XIV at Versailles used étiquettes (literally “little cards”) to remind courtiers of rules.
